Vermont's lone representative in the U.S. House wants to make it easier for people to buy electric vehicles.

Democratic Representative Peter Welch says he is going to introduce legislation that would provide buyers of electric vehicles up to a $10,000 tax credit that would be applied when buying the car.

Welch announced his plan for The Electric Vehicle Act during a Monday news conference next to an electric car charging station outside the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier.

Welch says providing the tax credit at the point of sale is the practical way to make it possible for a family to buy an electric vehicle.

Welch says if the country is going to make progress fighting climate change, electric vehicle technology must be made available to more people.
