Mohegan Sun has gotten a second bite of the casino apple in Massachusetts now that voters in Revere have strongly endorsed a $ 1.3 billion project at the Suffolk Downs race track.
The Connecticut-based company will compete against Wynn Resorts of Las Vegas for the lone casino license in the greater Boston area.The state gaming commission will award the license in May or June. Mohegan Sun’s bid to build a casino in Palmer was rejected by a 94 vote margin in a referendum last year. Palmer Town Councilor Paul Burns said he hopes Mohegan Sun doesn’t renege on its pledge to pursue a non-gaming development in the rural town.
" I would like to see the ( gaming) commission hold them accountable for that statement, but I think at the end of the day they are going to choose the site they believe is best for eastern Massachusetts, and Palmer is not going to play an awful lot in that decision."
MGM Springfield is the only applicant for the lone casino license in western Massachusetts.
