WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A charitable fund has collected nearly $23,000 for a homeless woman who alerted authorities to the presence ofa man with a gun at the University of New Haven.

University President Steven Kaplan says more than 400 people have contributed to the fund and that the woman is very grateful.

The woman hasn't been identified. She dialed 911 when she saw the man take guns from his car near campus on Dec. 3.

Twenty-three-year-old William Dong was arrested and the campus was locked down for more than four hours as police searched the school grounds. He was charged earlier this month with a federal firearms offense.

University officials later learned that the caller is homeless and collected the donations to help get her on her feet.
