Vermont's independent senator wants to know if the National Security Agency has been "spying" on members of Congress.
Senator Bernie Sanders has sent a letter to General Keith Alexander, director of the NSA, asking if the agency has spied, or is spying on, members of Congress or other American elected officials.
Sanders defines spying as "gathering metadata on calls made from official or personal phones, content from websites visited or emails sent, or collecting any other data from a third party not made available to the general public in the regular course of business."
The NSA said in a press release over the weekend that its authority to collect intelligence data include procedures that protect the privacy of U.S. persons and members of Congress have the same privacy protections.
