The largest health care provider in western Massachusetts is poised to take ownership of another hospital
The ownership of Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer will be transferred from Worcester-based UMass Memorial Medical Center to Baystate Health of Springfield. The ownership change won’t be finalized for several months. Palmer Town Councilor Paul Burns said he was surprised by the announcement.
"They're both equally good hospitals. I think in the long run the people of Palmer probably benefit from being geographically closer to the main hospital."
In addition to the 74 bed hospital in Palmer, Wing has four satellite centers. Baystate is the largest employer in western Massachusetts with three hospitals, several clinics and doctor’s practices.
