Vermont's only natural gas provider has formally asked for approval to build a second section of its proposed pipeline expansion, which would go across Lake Champlain to the International Paper plant in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Vermont Gas spokesman Steve Wark says the Public Service Board is expected to rule in the next month on the company's bid to expand its system as far south as Middlebury, from its current base in Chittenden and Franklin counties.

On Tuesday the company formally asked for Phase Two of its planned project, which would extend a pipeline from Middlebury to New York.

Wark says the ability to sell gas to International Paper would provide Vermont Gas the financing it would need for the planned 2020 expansion of natural gas service farther south to Rutland.
