Vermont High Court OK's Burlington Employee's Firing

WAMC/Pat Bradley

The Vermont Supreme Court has upheld a lower court's dismissal of a suit brought against the city of Burlington by its fired former waterfront manager.

Adam Cate sued in 2010 for what he called "outrageous and unreasonable" conduct by the city in suspending him and later firing him.

Vermont Superior Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford granted the city's request to dismiss the suit, and on Friday, the Vermont Supreme Court rejected Cate's appeal of that decision.

Court papers say Cate was fired after an investigation into allegations that he had improperly read other employees' emails and lied about it during a city investigation.

Cate had argued the city was trying to oust him for political reasons.
