Public Transit Activists Critical Of House Transporation Bill

Advocates for mass transit  in Massachusetts plan to lobby at the Statehouse on Wednesday where Governor Deval Patrick and legislative leaders remain at odds over transportation funding.

John Bennett, of the Massachusetts Senior Action Council, said the $500 million dollar tax  bill passed by the Massachusetts House is another in a long line of patchwork approaches to solving the state’s transportation woes.  He said it will likely maintain for a least a year, the current fares and service levels for transit authorities, like the PVTA.

Several transit advocates were arrested earlier this week when they blocked traffic on Beacon Street in front of the statehouse, while protesting higher fares for paratransit service for people with disabilities.   The Massachusetts Senate is expected to begin debate Thursday on  the house passed transportation bill.
