A top Environmental Protection Agency official warns that federal budget cuts threaten future brownfields cleanup projects in the northeast.
The New England Regional Director of the EPA, Curt Spalding said his agency is the only entity that can clean up abandoned former industrial sites because of the liability issues. He said sequestration puts brownfields clean up at risk.
Spalding participated in a groundbreaking on Monday for a senior center the city of Chicopee is building on the former site of a textile mill along the Chicopee River. The property, which contained asbestos and other pollutants was cleaned up with millions of dollars in funding from the federal government.
