Governor Peter Shumlin has appointed the deputy state's attorney for Orange County to become the state's attorney for Windsor County.

Michael Kainen will replace Windsor County State's Attorney Robert Sand, who is joining the Shumlin administration to work on sentencing and treatment efforts for drunken drivers.

Governor Peter Shumlin said Friday that Kainen's broad experience in civil and criminal practice, as well as his commitment to teaching and public service, make him a great choice to replace Sand.

Kainen also teaches criminal justice at other legal courses at Community College of Vermont. Before becoming Orange County deputy state's attorney, Kainen was an attorney with Hayes and Windish, PC, from 2008 to 2011, and also sat as an acting district judge in Orange and Windsor counties.
