Springfield, MA Officials Pursue Resort Casino Development

A casino advisory committee is being created in Springfield Massachusetts as city officials pursue a resort casino development.  WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports…

Springfield City Council President James Ferrera said the committee will advise the council on casino sitting issues.  The council could conceivably have to issue a special permit, change zoning, or take property by eminent domain to accommodate a casino development.

“Whether you are for a casino or against a casino, it’s important that your voices are heard.  That’s why I feel that it’s very important to have this committee.”

Ferrera said the committee will be chaired by retired former Springfield Police Chief Paula Meara.

Gaming company, Ameristar, has bought a former industrial site in Springfield and plans to compete for the one casino license that can be issued for western Massachusetts.

Springfield’s mayor is eager for a casino to bring sorely needed tax revenue and jobs.

The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
