NYS Assemblyman Issues Report After A Trip To The Southern Border

A New York state assemblyman was at the U.S. southern border recently. He visited some of the same places as did congressional members earlier in the summer. Yet Republican Colin Schmitt came away with a different impression, and a final report.

Republican Assemblyman Colin Schmitt planned his trip and funded it from his own bank account as he felt it was important to see the situation firsthand.

Schmitt visited the U.S. Border Patrol McAllen Station and toured the border in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas with local law enforcement. Schmitt says he then visited, on his own accord, the Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition emergency shelter.

Schmitt, a New Windsor resident who represents the 99th District, says New York is impacted by a so-called pull factor.

Following his trip, Schmitt released a report September 3rd, detailing what he saw and recommendations. And he will consider how to incorporate such phenomena like pull factors into a legislative discussion.

Schmitt’s report also includes information on drug and human trafficking and a border fence and wall.
