SUNY Board Of Trustees Votes To Rename New Paltz Buildings

The SUNY Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted unanimously in favor of a resolution to remove and replace the names of six buildings at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

The six buildings were named for Huguenot families connected with slave owners. Earlier in March, the SUNY New Paltz College Council had unanimously voted in favor of new names, which include Awosting, Shawagunk and Minnewaska. Such names reflect local geographic features. The vote from the SUNY Board of Trustees is the final approval needed for renaming the Hasbrouck Complex buildings. The new names, which drew on more than 3,000 survey responses, will be effective at the start of the fall 2019 semester.
