One of the units at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County has begun its final refueling and maintenance outage before being permanently shut down in 2021.
The scheduled maintenance outage for Buchanan-based Unit 3 that began Monday is the 20th and final one. A spokesman for Indian Point parent Entergy says the company is investing more than $70 million in the plant during the refueling outage. Entergy completed its final refueling and maintenance outage for Unit 2 during 2018. Unit 2 is slated to permanently close by April 30, 2020. Meantime, Entergy is working towards selling the plant once Indian Point shuts down.
