A clinical psychologist for Dutchess County will deliver a presentation on cultural humility Tuesday evening. Dr. Christopher St. Germain is with the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health. He spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne about the topic.
St. Germain says the presentation to the Medical Reserve Corps of Dutchess County and the county’s emergency medical services personnel is also open to community members who are interested in learning to work with diverse populations.
Cultural humility refers to a willingness to suspend what people know, or think they know, about other people based on generalizations about their cultures.
St. Germain, who also is a member of the county’s Human Rights Commission, says this is the first time cultural humility training is being offered to the Medical Reserve Corps, but expects the offering will become more regular. The presentation will be held tonight (Feb. 27) at 7 at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response in Poughkeepsie.
