Democratic voters sent a message in Westchester, from their choice for county executive to county legislators. Democratic New York state Senator George Latimer will be the new Westchester County executive, having defeated Republican Rob Astorino.

Astorino, in his concession speech, did not mention national politics. Astorino’s campaign spokesman William O’Reilly says it was a tough night.

“But I think a lot of Democrats wanted to come out today and make a statement,” O’Reilly says. “There was a massively higher turnout than there was in 2013, and I think it had a lot more to do with national politics than with local. But this is a democracy; you win some, you lose some.”

Latimer says this of the voters who chose him.

“They certainly have seen the policies out of Washington, out of the White House, and out of White Plains, and they want to see a change in direction,” Latimer says.

Meanwhile, Republican Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus won a second term as did Republican Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
