NYS Comptroller's Audit: East Ramapo School District Still In Fiscal Stress

An audit from the New York state comptroller finds the East Ramapo Central School District continues to face significant fiscal stress.

The report points to unrealistic budgeting, continued operating deficits and inadequate reserve funds as reasons for the fiscal stress. The report is from a follow-up audit from Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office, and assesses the district’s progress with implementing recommendations in audits in August 2011 and July 2013. Auditors found that most of these recommendations were not addressed or only partially implemented. This comes as the state legislature passed a bill to allow for budgetary oversight provided by the Commissioner of Education and the continuation of appointed monitors on the ground in the district, among other measures, with which the East Ramapo School Board agreed.
