Former SUNY New Paltz President Dies At 94

A former president of the State University of New York at New Paltz has died. More from WAMC’s Allison Dunne.

SUNY New Paltz President Emeritus Dr. John Neumaier, who led the College from 1968-1972, passed away Monday in Florida at age 94.  He completed the college’s transformation from a teacher’s college into a center for liberal arts and graduate studies. He also led the campus through a broader era of social unrest. For many years, Dr. Neumaier wrote a monthly column on politics and philosophy for the Daily Freeman. Current SUNY New Paltz President Donald Christian says that he wrote to Neumaier just last week to share with him that the school recently re-dedicated the “Cliffside” sculpture on the Humanities Building, installed in 1970 during Neumaier’s presidency.
