The Town of Chester has joined with eight other towns and villages and the County of Orange to explore suing the Village of Kiryas Joel and Town of Monroe over the approved annexation of land from the town into the village.

The Chester Town Board voted 4-0 on Wednesday night to join the litigation, maintaining the annexation would impact the entire county. Town Supervisor Alex Jamison said Thursday that it would also affect Chester more directly.

“A third of the people actually attend the Monroe School District even though they live in school district; their children attend the Monroe District even though they are residents of the Town of Chester, which makes us much more involved than just an outside presence and an outside town will be,” Jamison said.

The town board agreed to contribute up to $25,000 to the legal challenge, the same amount that the other participating communities have kicked in.
