State police say two people are dead following a multi-vehicle collision on the New York State Thruway in Rockland County.

Police say the crash occurred on I-87 near the Airmont Road exit in the Town of Ramapo shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, involving a tractor-trailer, two box trucks and another vehicle. Investigators believe collision was caused when one of the vehicles crossed over into southbound traffic from the northbound lanes.

The Journal News says a passenger in one of the trucks was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Emergency crews remained on the scene for several hours and Thruway traffic was diverted.
