State police say a 52-year-old man whose body was found floating in a Hudson Valley lake last weekend had drowned while canoeing.
Troopers tell the Daily Freeman of Kingston (http://bit.ly/1dh1q3M ) that the Ulster County medical examiner determined Joseph Nicholson's cause of death to be drowning.
Police say the Woodstock resident had taken fishing gear with him when he went fishing with a friend last Thursday afternoon on Onteora Lake in the town of Kingston. Troopers say the friend left the lake when it got dark but Nicholson went back out by himself.
Police say he lived alone and wasn't reported missing. Kayakers found his body Saturday afternoon. His partially submerged canoe was nearby. Troopers say he wasn't wearing a life jacket.
Police don't know why Nicholson fell into the water from his canoe.
