Judge Sets Bail For Woman Charged In Kayaker's Death

Prosecutors say a 35-year-old Latvian expatriate accused of killing her fiancée while paddling on the Hudson River admitted to tampering with his kayak.

They say Angelika Graswald of Poughkeepsie has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Vincent Viafore, also from Poughkeepsie. At a bail hearing Wednesday in Orange County, a prosecutor said Graswald felt trapped and stood to benefit from $250,000 in life insurance policies. Julie Mohl said Graswald told investigators, that "it felt good knowing he would die." Graswald's lawyer said he was skeptical about the statements prosecutors said she made to investigators. Police allege the crime happened on Bannerman Island, where Graswald volunteered as a gardener. Viafore's body has not been found. A judge set bail at $3 million cash.
