New York’s U.S. Senators and a Hudson Valley congresswoman are urging FEMA to expedite more funding to upgrade a hospital’s power system.
Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, have written to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s administrator, asking for expedited approval of more than $5 million in federal funding for power grid improvements at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco. They say the hospital’s power system failed during Superstorm Sandy, cutting off power for 70 hours. The lawmakers say the current system has one, outdated switch that violates safety codes. They say that if the hospital’s electrical infrastructure fails again, it could leave local residents without emergency care.
