Two closely-watched New York state Senate races in the Hudson Valley went to Republicans. WAMC’s Allison Dunne has more.
In the 41st Senate District, incumbent Democrat Terry Gipson lost to Republican Sue Serino. Serino, a Dutchess County legislator, secured about 51 percent of the vote to Gipson’s 46 percent. The district covers most of Dutchess County and part of Putnam.
In the 40th Senate District, Republican Terrence Murphy defeated Democrat Justin Wagner for the seat held by Republican Greg Ball, who did not seek re-election. Ball defeated Wagner in 2012. The district includes a few towns in Dutchess, along with portions of Putnam and Westchester Counties. Murphy took more than 53 percent of the vote while nearly 43 percent went to Wagner.
