Indian Point Unit 3 Is Back In Service

A reactor at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County that shut down earlier this week is up and running.

Buchanan-based Indian Point’s Unit 3 returned to service Friday afternoon after automatically shutting down Wednesday in response to a false electrical signal indicating a change in pressure. A plant spokesman says a faulty electrical relay component was replaced prior to returning the 1,000 megawatt reactor to service. A spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the shutdown happened as workers were testing safety systems and the testing was on hold for a lunch break when the shutdown occurred. The NRC spokesman says the agency’s resident Inspectors at Indian Point found the plant responded as expected and operator responses were appropriate.
