Late Author's Westchester House Is On The Market

The historic Westchester County home of late author John Cheever is on the market for $525,000.

Cheever's three children tell The Journal News they've decided to sell the house on 5-acres in Ossining. Susan Cheever says the house was the center of their family, but after their mother, Mary Cheever, died in April none of them wanted to live in it. John Cheever died in 1982. The 1795 house needs work but retains its architectural details. It features Dutch doors, pegged floors, stone terraces and patios and eight rooms on three levels. A brook runs through the front of the property. The Cheevers bought the house in 1961. Cheever's novels include "The Swimmer" and "Falconer."
