Developer For Proposed Newburgh Casino Highlights Poverty Figures

Saratoga Casino and Raceway

The developer behind one of the proposed casinos for Orange County is ramping up its push.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway is trying to make the case for its proposed Hudson Valley Casino and Resort in the Town of Newburgh, saying nearly 44,000 residents in Orange County live below the poverty level, and more than 10,000 of these residents live in the Town and City of Newburgh. A spokesman for Saratoga Casino, citing the latest U.S. Census figures, says the proposed resort could help spur economic development not only in Orange, but across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in Dutchess County, which Census figures show has the second highest number of residents in the region living below the poverty level, at just more than 27,000. Meanwhile, Alabama-based Greenetrack earlier this week unveiled its proposed casino resort for New Windsor, citing economic development and job creation in the same areas.
