Folk singer, activist, and environmentalist Pete Seeger will discuss writing in times of social upheaval social upheaval and change at Manhattanville College in Westchester County Friday evening.

Mark Nowak is director of the MFA program in creative writing at Manhattanville College in Purchase. He says he hatched the idea of inviting Beacon resident Pete Seeger for a writers talk a few years ago with Hudson Valley activist Connie Hogarth, who founded the Connie Hogarth Center for Social Action at Manhattanville College. Nowak says the idea grew to the following.

Nowak says he will engage Seeger in a public conversation on writing and the social imagination — what it means to be a creative artist in times of social upheaval and social change. Nowak says they will examine the role writing and language have played in the 94-year-old Seeger’s long career.

He says there is one predictable aspect of the conversation with Seeger.

He says the conversation with Seeger is the culmination of a series of events as part of the college’s second annual Valiant Week aimed to inform about the history of the college. It is also is part of Meet the Writers.

Nowak expects a varied audience, from near - faculty, students, and community members - and far.

The talk with Seeger is open to the public and takes place Friday evening at 7 in the West Room of Reid Hall at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.
