More than 100 acres has been preserved in New York’s Hudson Highlands.
Environmental group Scenic Hudson has acquired a conservation easement on the Cat Rock property in Philipstown, in Putnam County. The easement preserves 121 forested acres surrounding Cat Rock, a residence built in 1919 by Frederick Henry Osborn Sr. on an estate acquired by his grandfather in the 19th century. The Cat Rock property is the last large portion of the estate remaining in Osborn hands. To ensure its permanent protection, the family donated 38 percent of the appraised value of the easement. In addition to views stretching to the Manhattan skyline, a new trail will link unconnected portions of Hudson Highlands State Park. The transaction is part of Scenic Hudson’s Saving the Land That Matters Most campaign.
