Worldwide Protests Against Two Retailers Include One In Poughkeepsie

WAMC/Allison Dunne

There will be demonstrations worldwide Saturday as part of what’s being called the International Day of Action Against Deathtraps.

A few such demonstrations against garment factory conditions in Bangladesh are scheduled in New York, including in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, and Manhattan, to call on Gap and Walmart to protect their workers. Hudson Valley group Watch the Gap will hold a rally outside the Poughkeepsie Galleria’s main entrance beginning at noon Saturday. Protestors are calling on the two major U.S. retailers to sign a legally-binding accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, one which many major retailers have signed. Instead, Gap and Walmart are working with the Bipartisan Policy Center on a different safety action plan and are reportedly close to an agreement.
