Orange County, NY GOP Locks Out Electronic Media

GOSHEN – There was an unusual twist to the Orange County Republican Committee’s nominating convention held at a Goshen restaurant Wednesday night. Signs posted on the doors announced a prohibition to audio or video recording and still picture taking during the convention and, in fact, a reporter for MidHudsonNews.com was refused entry because he had digital recording equipment.

Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton and Chester Town Supervisor Steve Neuhaus were both vying for the party’s nod to run for county executive in November. Neuhaus took some 75 percent of the votes at the convention, according to a Facebook post.

The Putnam County Republican Committee refused all reporter access to their nominating convention until its conclusion on Monday.

The Mid-Hudson News Network, the parent of MidHudsonNews.com has been reporting on political party conventions for over 40 years and this is the first time a journalist with recording equipment was prohibited from the activities of the Orange County Republican Committee.

Democratic Orange County executive candidate Roxanne Donnery said the lockout was another example of the backroom politics by the Republicans.

Cameras were more than welcome as the Democrats confirmed Donnery as their candidate.
