The first of two additional public hearings on a proposed utility merger in New York takes place this evening.

A number of Hudson Valley-area state lawmakers had requested that the New York State Public Service Commission extend the comment period and add public hearings regarding the proposed merger between Poughkeepsie-based CH Energy Group, Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation’s parent, with Canadian energy company Fortis, Inc. The comment period was extended to May 1, and a public hearing scheduled for this evening in Poughkeepsie, and tomorrow evening in Kingston, both at 7. Several area residents along with elected officials have raised a number of concerns, which Central Hudson spokespeople have tried to allay. Many who are questioning the merger are holding a rally in front of Poughkeepsie City Hall, an hour before the hearing.
