A New York Congressman from the Hudson Valley will talk today about dam safety.

Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney later this morning will announce the introduction of the National Dam Safety Act of 2013. He says the Act would be instrumental in supporting dam-safety programs in New York. Maloney says New York has 403 so-called high-hazard dams, with nearly 100 of these in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, and Westchester Counties. He notes that during Hurricane Irene, officials had to evacuate neighborhoods in the potential path of flooding near dams at the Warwick Reservoir, as well as dams in the towns of Deerpark, Blooming Grove, and Tuxedo, all in Orange County. Maloney says the American Society of Civil Engineers supports the measure.
