Benefits To Be Extended for County's Active-Duty Service Members

Legislators in one of New York’s Hudson Valley counties say they plan to extend a measure that guarantees that county employees who are serving on active duty are held harmless on their pay.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is asking the Board of Legislators to extend for another year the legislation that was first adopted in 2001 and extended numerous times since. A spokesman for the legislators says they absolutely intend to do so. The measure authorizes the county to pay the service members the difference between their regular county salaries and their military salaries. During this period, county health, dental and vision benefits are also safeguarded. Astorino says there are currently six employees who are using the supplemental military leave; and, since 2001, 51 employees have benefited from the law. He notes the legislation picks up where state law that mandates six-months of gap payments ends.
