At least two New York congressional representatives in the Hudson Valley say they voted in favor of the “No Budget, No Pay” act, which passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 285-144. The legislation ensures the U.S. avoids defaulting on its debt, and would withhold congressional pay until Congress passes a budget.
The bill removes the nation’s debt limit through May 18. It also requires that each House of Congress pass a budget by April 15 or else congressional members will not be paid. Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, who represents the 18th district, said he said he joined with Republicans, who overwhelmingly supported the measure.
Republican Congressman Chris Gibson, whose 19th District includes portions of several Hudson Valley counties, also voted in support of “No Budget, No Pay”. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a statement, saying the Senate will look to pass the House bill by seeking an agreement with Republicans to bring the bill to the floor in the coming days.
