Vermont GOP Leaders Say Lawmakers Can Vote Belief On Governor

Vermont Republican legislative leaders say their party members can vote their consciences in the upcoming balloting to choose the next governor.

Republican leaders spoke Friday a day after Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Milne said he wouldn't concede defeat after his narrow loss to Democratic incumbent Governor Peter Shumlin in Tuesday's election.

Unofficial returns show Shumlin beat Milne with about 46 percent to Milne's 45 percent. Under the Vermont constitution, if no candidate receives more than 50 percent the election is decided by the Legislature.

Vermont Democrats control a majority of the seats in the Legislature.

Republican Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott says he'd follow tradition and vote for Shumlin. House Minority Leader Don Turner says he'd probably follow voters in his hometown of Milton and vote for Milne.
