Heroes: What They Do and Why We Need Them
Heroes: What They Do and Why We Need Them
Abraham Lincoln, Princess Diana, Rick in Casablanca, Eleanor Roosevelt, Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino, Senator Ted Kennedy, explorer Ernest Shackleton… what qualities do we admire in them? The psychology of heroism sheds light on what heroism and villainy mean to us, and why heroes - both real and fictional - are vital to our lives. Prof. Allison describes Great Eight traits of heroes, and outlines our mental models of how people become heroes, from underdogs to the heroes who redeem themselves or overcome adversity.
Scott T. Allison Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at the Univ. of Richmond, researches the psychology of heroism and leadership. He is Editor-in-Chief of Heroism Science, and his work has appeared in his numerous books and many media publications.
