Maria Black will host this evening of readers from the Thursday Group, her long standing Berkshire based writing group which has been meeting for over 10 years. Readers will include: Terry Wise, Molly Boxer, Lydia Littlefield, Joan Cohen, Julie McCarthy, Lisa Cavender, Megan Moore, and Joan Embree.

Maria has written literary fiction for over twenty-five years and has seen her stories published in numerous literary journals. She was awarded a 2022 Pushcart Prize for “Mark on the Cross,” a story published by The Sun Magazine and a Bentley Prize by The Seattle Review. Her fiction has been included in several books on writing. She currently leads two ongoing weekly writing groups, one on Tuesday morning, and the other on Thursday afternoons.

Maria was born in Houston and graduated with an honors degree in English Literature from The University of Texas at Austin. She worked on Capitol Hill for six years, then earned her MBA at Yale University before moving first to Boston and later to the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.

Maria earned her MFA in fiction from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where she taught freshman writing and creative writing and studied with Noy Holland, Edie Meidav and Sabina Murray, among others. She currently lives in New Marlborough, MA with her husband. She has two children.

Use Your Words brings writers, readers, and listeners together for evenings of sharing and conversation. Each date will be hosted by a different local writer, with readings by colleagues, students, writing groups, published authors, and storytellers. Themes will include Emergence, Grief, Creaturely Stories, Lives Gone Off Script, True Tales, Memoirs, and more. The hosts will open conversations around each evening’s themes, but also talk about writing practices, writing groups, and other skills to empower the art of writing and to encourage reading.

Third Wednesdays: Show & Tell, a music and art soireé hosted by Michael Lesko
Fourth Wednesdays: Game Nights with hosts Maggie McRae and Michael Siktberg. Bring a game or join a game.
