The often debated issue of microbeads in consumer products gets an airing tonight in Albany.
The Albany County Legislature’s Health Committee is holding a public hearing on a county-wide microbead ban 7 p.m. this evening at 16 Eagle Street. Environmental actvists will present testimony, as will representatives from Citizen Campaign for the Environment, the Attorney General’s Office, and others.
Travis Proulx is with Environmental Advocates.
"Microbeads are a needless waste. They're tiny plastic pellets that are put into items like facewash, toothpaste, and a lot of people don't realize, because they're small, that they're actually creating huge problems. Areas like the Capital Region, communities along the Hudson River, are particularly sensitive to this because the plastics go down the drain, they screw up wastewater systems, they end up in our waterways where they're eaten by fish and make their way back into the food chain. Albany County is one of several counties that has now taken action statewide in the absence of the legislature's ability to get a statewide ban into law."
The general public is invited to attend tonight's event.
