New York has settled for $2.25 million a lawsuit filed by a family that claimed the staff at an upstate New York residential center beat a severely disabled 22-year-old with a stick, neglected him and left him malnourished before he died of pneumonia.
Federal court documents named six staff at the recently closed O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Niskayuna, saying they verbally and physically abused the resident — identified in court papers only as K.C. — who was in their care and had unexplained cuts and bruises when taken to the hospital in 2011.
The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities did not immediately reply Wednesday to a request for comment.
