Each Wednesday and Sunday evening at 8 p.m. Live At The Linda brings you some of the best musical acts to grace the stage at The Linda - WAMC's Performing Arts Studio. This week features instrumental surf band The Jagaloons from December 2020 and Y La Bamba from May 2018.

Starting off tonight’s show is a set from The Jagaloons recorded December 7th at The Linda for our Open For Takeout Virtual Concert Series.Hailing from Albany NY, The Jagaloons play guitar-driven, reverb-drenched, all-instrumental rock and roll. This quartet takes the surf music sound of the 1960s and adds modern and eclectic influences, creating a sound all of their own.

After releasing a couple of EPs themselves, the Jagaloons signed on with UK-based Sharawaji Records for their 2019 debut album “Ruin The Party”. The album has been very well received and has been featured on numerous radio stations across the globe. “Ruin the Party” was recently named #37 on the list of the top surf records of the 2010’s by stormsurgeofreverb.com.

Last December, The Jagaloons hit the studio to put a collection cover songs from their live set to “tape” with the idea of streaming one song per week on Bandcamp. Once all the songs were released, the entire album was made available for purchase both digitally and on CD. The album title, “Knock You Up”, and cover art are even an homage to The Ventures.

While no one knows what lies ahead, the Jagaloons continue to write songs and are determined to keep releasing music throughout 2021 and beyond. During the bands set I was able to interview the band so we can learn just a little bit more about them,

So have a listen to The Jagaloons high energy set recorded Live at The Linda December 7th 2020 for our Open For Take Out Virtual Concert Series.

We will finish the night off with a set from Portland Oregon based Latin indie alternative band Y La Bamba. The project is led by singer songwriter guitarist Luz Mendoza. As a first generation Mexican American the songs include both Spanish and English lyrics. Her influences while coming from many places seem to always play homage to her Mexican heritage. After playing many open mic nights she was able to network and meet a rotating cast of musicians that would eventually become her band.

The band has released records dating back to 2008 starting with the self-produced  LoFi album Aida St. which was compared by Pitchfork to the likes of Joanna Newsom and CocoRosie. As the band kept releasing records you could hear Mendoza’s influences more and more. Working with producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, touring with The Lumineers and playing SXSW has established the working sound of the band leading to their more refined sound in their later records.

For tonight’s show the band was touring on the back of their album Ojos Del Sol the bands 4th album which is a great example of tradition and the evolution of the band. The record establishes the idea that it’s a sum of all of our experiences good and bad that make us grow into who we are.  This album reached NPR’s top 50 of 2016.

Mendoza moved on to release Mujeres in February 2019 to critical acclaim reaching number 7 on the Billboard Latin pop charts. So let’s have a listen to Y La Bamba recorded Live at The Linda May 9th 2018.

We realize that the impacts of COVID-19 have been dire for working musicians and the music industry as a whole. The Linda: WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio is thrilled to let you know about “The Open for Takeout Virtual Concert Series” produced in collaboration with Chromoscope Pictures. The program features local and regional musicians playing on The Linda stage and viewable worldwide online through Youtube. The goal of this series is to bring musicians back to the stage in a safe environment and provide fans with a professionally produced concert delivered directly to your homes. Similar to some of our in-person concerts, these will be ticketed events. And similar to all in-person concerts at The Linda, we will insure the highest standard of production.

Coming up on The Open for Take-Out VCS we welcome singer-songwriter Matt Nakoa Thursday April 8th at 8 pm, and traditional blues band Misty Blues, Monday April 12th  at 8 pm, You can find tickets to these shows and the rest of the series at thelinda.org or keep up with us on Facebook (@thelindawamc) and Instagram (the_linda_performing_arts).
