Democratic Massachusetts State Representative John Velis is claiming victory in the special election for the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire District Senate seat.
Velis defeated Republican John Cain in Tuesday’s race, flipping a seat long held by Republicans. The seat became open when Don Humason stepped down to become mayor of Westfield. The election featured in-person voting, but voters were also able to request mail-in ballots.
