Reported Officer-Involved Shooting In Downtown Albany

Police have closed Elk Street between Robin Street and North Lake Avenue and investigators are on the scene of a reported officer-involved shooting in Albany's West Hill neighborhood.

Acting Albany police chief Mike Basile told reporters that detectives responded to a reported fight, possibly involving a handgun, on the 200 block of Central Avenue, at about 4:30 on Monday afternoon.

When confronted by police, a man matching the description of the possibly armed suspect ran toward Elk Street. Detectives gave chase. The suspect was fired upon and struck by a detective near 395 Elk Street.  The suspect was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment. The acting chief had no word on his condition.

Investigators found a large hunting knife near the scene of the shooting. Investigators remain on the scene.
