WAMC Sports Report: NCAA Div. 1 Hockey Starts and Basketball Continues

The NCAA tournament continues tonight when No. 2 Michigan goes head to head with No. 11 Tennessee at 7:15 p.m. on CBS, and later No. 8 Kentucky will see No. 4 Louisville at 9:45 p.m. also on CBS. No. 3 Iowa State plays against No. 7 UConn tonight at 7:27 p.m. on TBS, followed immediately by No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 Michigan State at 9:57 p.m.

Last night, No. 1 Florida beat No. 4 UCLA 79-68, No. 1 Arizona defeated No. 4 San Diego State 70-64, No. 2 Wisconsin bested No. 6 Baylor 69-52, and No. 11 Dayton upset No. 10 Stanford 82-72. No. 1 Florida sees No. 11 Dayton at 6:09 p.m. Saturday and No. 1 Arizona vs No. 2 Wisconsin at 8:49 p.m.

In NCAA women’s basketball, undefeated No. 1 UConn goes head to head with No. 12 BYU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN.

The CBI finals start Monday when Siena plays Fresno State in an away game at 10 p.m. Game 2 and Game 3 will take place at Siena rather than at the Times Union Center, a first in 17 years.

After a four-year absence, the University of Vermont men’s hockey team is back in the NCAA Division I tournament. The Catamounts (20-14-3) will play three-time ECAC champion Union (24-6-4) in the opening game of the NCAA at the East Regional in Bridgeport, CT today at 2 p.m. on ESPNU.

In the NBA, Portland beat Atlanta 100-85, Milwaukee defeated the Lakers 108-105, Houston bested Philadelphia 120-98, and the Clippers topped Dallas 109-103.

In the NHL, Boston shut out Chicago 3-0, Tampa Bay trumped the Islanders in a shoot out 3-2, It was Nashville over Buffalo 6-1, Montreal out shot Detroit 5-4, Phoenix defeated New Jersey in a shoot out 3-2, St. Louis beat Minnesota 5-1, Los Angeles topped Pittsburgh 3-2, Carolina edged Florida 3-0, Colorado slid past Vancouver in overtime 3-2, and Winnipeg squeaked by San Jose 4-3.
