East Longmeadow Signs Casino Impact Deal With MGM

Christopher Chappelear

East Longmeadow has signed an agreement with MGM Resorts International to compensate any negative impact of a proposed casino in nearby Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Republican reports the deal is $100,000 a year for 15 years.

The chairman of the board of selectmen says impact studies find the town would see about a 6 percent increase in traffic.

The town will get $50,000 for consultant fees for its independent impact study, and will be able to reassess one year after a casino opens and again at five years.

Ludlow has signed an agreement with MGM. Longmeadow is still negotiating.

MGM's $800 million casino proposal was endorsed by Springfield voters in July. Several nearby towns have passed non-binding referendums opposing it.

The state gambling commission will take the opinions of surrounding towns into account.
