An attorney for Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger says he plans to appeal his client's conviction.

Bulger was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for 11 killings and a string of other charges including extortion and money laundering.

His attorney Hank Brennan promised an appeal of the conviction, though he didn't say on what grounds. He railed about the plea deals given to Bulger's associates who testified against him.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz says prosecutors had to make difficult decisions to get Bulger, who they believe was the kingpin of the organization.

On Thursday, Judge Denise Casper told Bulger his crimes were "heinous" and "all about money." She then sentenced him to two consecutive life sentences, plus five years.
