In baseball, just two games separate five teams vying for the final American League wild-card berth.

Tampa Bay's lead continued to shrink with a 7-3 loss to the Red Sox. Mike Carp had a pinch-hit grand slam in the 10th inning. It was the first pinch-hit grand slam for Boston since Kevin Millar hit one at Milwaukee on June 7th, 2003.

The Yankees are within one game of the Rays after turning a 3-1 deficit into a 5-4 triumph over Baltimore. Robinson Cano snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a solo blast leading off the ninth after Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez went deep to knot the score. The Birds stayed 1 ½ games behind the Rays.

Derek Jeter will miss the rest of the season after being placed on the disabled list Wednesday with an ankle injury. The 39-year-old Yankee captain called this season "a nightmare."

Cleveland is also 1 ½ games behind Tampa Bay after losing 6-2 to Kansas City.

Oakland and Detroit were able to pad their division leads. The Athletics erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning and cruised to an 18-3 pounding of Minnesota.

The Tigers blanked the White Sox 1-0. The Angels beat Toronto 5-4 and Houston topped Seattle 6-1.

In the National League, St. Louis remains atop in the NL Central, one game ahead of Pittsburgh and three games better than Cincinnati. The Cardinals bested Milwaukee 5-1. Cincinnati shut out the Cubs 6-0. San Francisco won against Colorado 4-3.

Philadelphia doubled San Diego 4-2. It was Miami over Atlanta 5-2. The Braves' magic number for clinching the NL East is seven.

Washington blanked the Mets 3-0 and Arizona edged the Dodgers 4-1. Washington remains six games behind Cincinnati for the final NL wild-card berth. The Dodgers' magic number for claiming the NL West remains six

In interleague play, Texas fell to Pittsburgh 7-5.

Finally in the NFL, Mark Sanchez has a tear in his right shoulder, and the New York Jets quarterback is "likely to have surgery" that would end his 2013 season.
