Yanks Five-Run Eighth Rescues Game

In baseball, the Yankees put together a five-run eighth to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Alfonso Soriano sparked the comeback with a two-run single and Curtis Granderson singled home the tying run before Eduardo Nunez lined a two-run double.

Elsewhere in the American League, Boston defeated Detroit 2-1. Will Middlebrooks hit a two-run single in the fifth off Max Scherzer.

Cleveland beat Baltimore 4-3. Minnesota topped Houston 9-6 in 12 innings. Kansas City trumped Seattle 4-3. Tampa Bay bested the Angels 7-1 and the Texas Rangers are alone atop the AL West following a 5-1 victory over Oakland.

In the National League, it was Atlanta over the Mets 3-1. Washington passed Philadelphia 9-6. Cincinnati blanked St. Louis 1-0. Miami beat the Cubs 6-2. Pittsburgh took Milwaukee 4-3. The Pirates doubled their lead in the National League Central. The Dodgers won against Colorado 7-4 and San Francisco fell to San Diego 3-2.

In interleague play, Toronto beat Arizona 10-4.

In the NFL, the Texans signed inside linebacker Brian Cushing to a six-year contract extension worth more than $55 million, including $21 million guaranteed.

In tennis, things couldn't have been easier for Serena Williams at the U.S. Open.

The top-seeded Williams dismantled Carla Suarez Navarro 6-love, 6-love to reach the women's semifinals.

Men's top-seed Novak Djokovic cruised into the quarters with a 6-3, 6-love, 6-love victory over Spain's Marcel Granollers. Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka, and Li Na are also advancing.
