The Albany school district has a picked a New Jersey educator to be its next superintendent.
The Times Union reports that Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard must first get a certification from the state Education Department before she is named superintendent of the Albany school district because she is not certified to be a superintendent in New York. The Albany school board voted last night to formally request that the department give Vanden Wyngaard – currently the deputy superintendent of public schools in Paterson, N.J. -- a school district leader certificate.
Certification requests are unusual, according to the state Education Department. Most recently, the state gave a waiver to Cathie Black, a media executive with no education experience whatsoever, for the position of Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. Black lasted three months in the post.
Vanden Wyngaard holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Kent State University.
