Boston, MA – Trustees of the University of Massachusetts have approved a $502 million budget request from the state for the next fiscal year. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...
U-Mass President Robert Caret said the request approved in Worcester on Wednesday represents nearly half of the five-campus system's general educational expenses and is part of the university's goal of returning to a 50-50 split in funding between the state and students.
This year's $418 million funding represented about 45 percent of the general budget.
Caret says a 50-50 split is the norm nationwide. A decade ago, the state funded 63 percent of the university's general education budget. He says the state needs to ease the financial burden on students and their families.
